Founded in 1976, LGCM has become the largest and most prominent group fighting to bring about change in the Christian Church's traditional and deeply entrenched homophobic attitudes towards gay and lesbian sexuality. The first section of this book provides a history of the movement which seeks to portray its aims and activities within the broader context of social and religious change over the past twenty years, and includes a critical analysis of the impact of the growth of the religious right and of the AIDS crisis upon campaigns for gay and lesbian liberation. This is followed by a representative selection of previously unpublished personal testimonies, pamphlets and articles from the movement's archives. The book concludes with three essays by Sean Gill, Robert Goss and Elizabeth Stuart which examine the moral and theological issues surrounding contemporary debates about homosexuality in the light of recent developments in queer theory and gender studies.
