Why being a boss sucks sometimes

I've never really thought about it like this, but I guess I am a boss.

It happened fairly casually where I suudenly got a 'senior' in my title, and someone without a 'senior' came in underneath me. Then I started approving leave, checking their work and bang...I'm a boss.

It wasn't so hard at the start. I'm a casual boss I'd say, as long as things are going right. I worked more as a pair rather than me on top of someone else. I found that worked really well too...until I did such a good job of being a boss that my not 'senior' person got a promotion. (Actually, it probably didn't have much to do wiht me at all, but I'll take the credit)

Then I got a new person. I had to rework my strategy as little but after a month or so it really started to flow again. And it's been going really well.

Then we had a structural change and I now officially have 2 direct reports. Herein where my current problem lies.

You see, I have my not 'senior' person, but we also ended up with a complete newby, fresh meat, a blank canvas. And while this person is lovely, they are a little too blank. After 2.5 weeks of solid training, there has been little unsupervised work done and a lot of illogical questions asked. Both of these issues spell disaster for me. The newby was hired in a temp role while we went about the interviewing process to find a permanent person. However, we made such a good impression on the newby in her first week that she decided to put in for the permanent role.

That would be great except for the fact that someone more qualified and a little less blank has also applied and it looks like they'll get the role. So now we have to tell newby that she missed out on the permanent role, but she can still hang out on her temp contract through to the end of the year.

I don't know about you, but I would probably tell the company to stick it. And fair enough too. But being on the other side of the fence gives you an entirely new perspective into the job thing.

So why does it suck to be boss? I have to dismiss someone's dreams and possibly deal with my workload, their workload and the workload of my not 'senior' (who's on leave that I approved) for a week! Sounds fun doesn't it.
